7 Habits of Effective Teens, Part I

Sean Covey's book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" is an excellent resource in changing teens' paradigms of how to be successful in the present and future life. The next serious of blogs will focus on these seven habits and how they relate to Raider life.

First, one must be willing to change. Our "will" is arguably the most important aspect of our "hidden" person that determines how we will. In other words, the "will" is responsible for transferring the "what we know" to the "what we do." Our "will" is what allows our lives to change if we subject our "will" to NEW ways of thinking. Will you yield to new ways of thinking?

Second, we must address the concept of "habit." Habits are regular patterns of behavior that become a product of our subconscious. In other words, habits are behaviors that do not require active intervention to implement but are natural behaviors as a result of repeated, previous training.

In order to experience transformation, we must form new habits. This takes time, work and patience. Change can be more difficult for some and require patience on everyone's part. Success in the change process doesn't arrive in UPS type shipments but over several weeks of deliberate intervention.

Are any of the following areas in your life needing changed or lacking success?
  • Relationships with peers
  • Relationships with family
  • Relationships with teachers, coaches and advisors
  • Work relationships
  • Work conditions
  • Academic progress
  • Personal confidence
  • Communication
  • Addictions
Start the journey of implementing these seven habits by first taking inventory. What would you like to change? It starts with the "will" submitting to the laborious, but profitable process of change!

Good Luck! Habit 1, BE PROACTIVE....(more to come next week)

  1. Like in life, its the same in leaders and people in major. If you wanna see change and you wanna make change, first in you !,you need to have will and habit to do it.I f you wanna have change you need to have will and have fainth and if you wanna be the same you have to have new ways and change yourself.
Habits are things that you are used to do all the time and you even now that is habit sometimes. But sometimes you need to have new habits,it will take time but good leader has all good skills to have new habits that will help him change his life.First thing you need to do is make connections with your family, friends, and improve you inner strenghts and only thing you can do is have Will to change and new habits to follow !

  2. everyone has habiits. Some are good and some are bad at times. Everyone has the "will" to change i believe. It all depends on peoples attitudes and how they were raised. Habits are hard to kick. Some are good also. You have to want to change or you wont. You have to take the fist step and do and change what you need/want to.

  3. The will to change is very important because without it you will have no motivation to better yourself and improve your life. Habits are something that you develop over time and good or bad, they shape the person that you are so you should make sure you're happy with how your habits make you appear. I think that everyone could find something in the list that you posted that needs changed.

  4. I think being able to change as a leader is important. You are going to have to be flexible because things you or the people your working with won't always work. You will have to find the "will" to change and make it work. Everyone has good and bad habits. I think everyone can work on changing those bad habits into good ones. It will take work and "will" power to do it though. Every leader can develop good habits!

  5. I think that leaders need to have "will" to cahnge and to make changes. Leaders are the ones who take that first step toward the change for the better. I think that we all hvae in us the "will" to change our bad habits into positive ones so we become leaders that are strong yet able to fit the situation. To be a good leader you need to make sure to pass down your good habits while setting an example as you change the bad.

  6. Having the "will" to change is very important because as a leader you have to be willing to change. If you don't change you will be stuck in the past and won't be up to date with the rapidly changing society. That will can motivate you to do great things and bring yourself to a new relationship with your followers. If the you generate that new "will" to change something in your life, you will ultimately bring that "will" to a habit which can benefit your life.

  7. As leaders we need to be able to change. The "will" to change as leaders is huge when you're trying to lead other people and get them to change. I think that everyone has good habits and bad habits. Everyone can work on their bad habits to try and fix them, but to do that, you need the will to try and fix it.

  8. We all have habits and some of them are better than others. Leaders have to be willing to change some of their habits if they are going to lead. Everyone can change their habits not only leaders.

  9. If you don't have the will to change then you won't do it. If you have the will to change somehting then you will do whatever it takes to change that. We all have our own habits both good and bad, we just have to know how to use them and when we should use them. Our habits started when we were young and would be hard to change but if you have the will you have a good chance of changing those bad habits.

  10. The "will" to change is a very important step in all aspects of life, as the phrase goes if theirs a will their is a way. To make the change you must have the right habits, that will help you develop that change, which comes after your will. I think different habits are very hard to change because after doing something for a while it is stuck with you, which is where the will can overcome all those bad things that occur in life.
