Values of Leadership: Resiliency

Core values are those strongly held beliefs that define what is important to us. Dr. King stated, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent on the things that matter." Every leader must be confident and passionate about what is important. Our values shape who we are and what we are about. It helps clarify our vision for leadership.

One particular value every leader must have is resiliency. Every leader experiences hardship and even failure. It's how leaders respond to failure that will determine the future success and improvement of his or her leadership. Resiliency is that inner quality that take determination and works through trials, hardships and failure. Resiliency is deciding to not let failure become a final destination but simply a resting spot to regain composure before moving on. Leaders must live with the perspective that failure is a part of success.

Watch the following video by Michael Jordan and comment what core values shape his perspective on failure:

  1. learn from your mistakes and failures, succeed where you once failed, if you believe in something enough nothing will stop you from achieving that goal. To quote Rocky, " Its not about how hard you can get hit, but how hard you can get hit and still push forward"

  2. The thing I got from the video is that you can't forget your mistakes or pretend like they never happened, because they did. Neither can you beat yourself up over them. You have to accept them, acknowledge that you've messed up, this keeps you humble and helps you to grow. You can't hold on to your failures though, you have to push on from your mistakes and remember them so that the next time you can know what you did and fix it.

  3. This commercial was really inspiring. Leaders are not born, they are made. They became tough trough dificult situations, and with hard work. When you see this commercial you see how a great sportsman, a leader that has a lot of fans failed, but he is great because he rised from ashes. Leaders are people who do not quit when it is hard, when it is hard that is time when they show what are they made of. They have values and goals, and one bump on the road will not stop them from accomplishing their goal.

  4. I think its really important to keep going no matter what happens. Its not in human to fail but don't let that make you think that you don't have to try your best. If you don't try your best at everything then no matter what you have already failed. I heard some where that its only a mistake if you don't learn from it. I think its good for peole to fail sometimes it helps you to stay humble and keeps you moviated. Remember anything you do there is going to be people who disagree for various reasons. Let those who say you can't be your inspiration to prove you can.

  5. i like this alot because lets face it we all fail i probably more than others but i believe it all shapes you into what you will do the next time the same situation comes up i think without failure we wouldn't not truly know core values because we would just float through life never failing so thats why i think resiliency is key to every leader or everyone that want to get better

  6. Accept failure when it happens, and not to get discouraged by, but only when you know the mistakes you made and are WILLING to correct them. Failure is part of life, the only reason we succeed is because we have met failure in our path to glory

  7. I think one of his values is to always finish. No matter how many times you fail you have to pick yourself back up. Your failures only make you stronger and want something more.

  8. Its not about all the things to get the accomplishments you made in your life thats important. Its how many times you failed and picked yourself back up that matters. learning from mistakes is the only way to finish what you started.

  9. It seems that he knows there is a chance of failer but he isn't going to, and he's going to do what ever it takes to get his goal and then do more.
He also isn't going to let others tell him he can't reach his goal, or that it is dumb. And he will prove you wrong.

  10. Don't try to act like you don't make mistakes is what I got, don't try to say that I'm perfect and it's never my fault, admit your mistakes for what they are, and never make excuses.

  11. I just always keep in mind this words "Success is JOURNEY, Not a Destination"
There are always some failures in our journeys, but they make you stronger, though.
It's important to be flexible and never stop trying.

  12. Well, I can say only two things about it: first was said by Ralph Waldo Emerson,
"Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall..."
the second thing was realized by me:
If you are in a team with really strong people and their expierence is more much rich than yours...you will feel like an Ugly Duckling...BUT... the only thing you need is... TIME... to become a beautiful swan...

  13. failure is bound to happen, so he prepares himself. But he doesn't want to fail. failure doesn't HAVE to happen. but everyone knows it will. so prepare yourself for the worst, but don't expect the worst.
